Q&A: Rolling Dice
Rolling Dice
Question
Despite how bizarre this sounds, the question is serious –
Recently I read an interesting book called “The Dice Man,” about a man who decided to hand over all his decisions to a die (he writes down six possibilities—including some truly horrific ones, and I won’t go into that here—and acts according to the die’s ruling).
It turns out that some people use this as a psychological aid for dealing with procrastination (for example, writing down the things you need to do and then immediately doing one of them based on the die’s decision). Is this permitted? Or is it a kind of divination? [True, there is no divination here, because the person is not assuming that the random event is a sign that one time is more favorable than another, but there is still some sort of “lot” here.]
Answer
There is nothing here that has anything to do with divination, precisely for the reason you wrote. The only important question is whether it is helpful or not. But that is a question for a psychologist.
