Q&A: Returning a Heretical Book
Returning a Heretical Book
Question
Hi Rabbi, happy holidays.
I bought a book that I realized is a book of heresy/apostasy, arguing against the giving of the Torah, etc. The book is also full of slander and disparagement of the sages.
My question is whether I may return it to the store in order to get a different book.
Is there not an issue here of "do not place a stumbling block," etc.? Or perhaps specifically not returning it strengthens the purchase of the book, because then they will print more—since the book counts as more purchased if it is not returned.
Thank you,
Or
Answer
You may return it. You are not causing anyone to stumble, because there are other copies available for purchase anyway. On the contrary, buying it strengthens sales.
Thank you very much, Rabbi.
Have a happy holiday.
