Decision-Making

Question

Hello Rabbi, I’m facing a not-so-simple dilemma.
I’m a student in a hesder yeshiva who enlisted four months ago into a desk-job type of role that I really don’t connect with, and I’m finding it very difficult.
On the one hand, I feel very connected to Torah study, and I try to learn and observe as much as possible. And when I was in yeshiva, you could say I used my time as much as possible.
On the other hand, I want to serve in a meaningful role in the army, and my only option for moving to a meaningful role is to sign a waiver giving up my yeshiva-student status and extend my IDF service to full service. That would create some serious difficulties for me on the religious side, and because of that I would miss returning to yeshiva with my friends. And there’s no way of knowing whether in another two years and eight months I’ll still want to return to yeshiva (right now I’m sure I will return, but there’s no telling how I’ll feel after two years in the IDF in a completely secular environment).
If I don’t extend my service, it will be very hard for me to make proper use of the year and a bit that I have left in service for Torah study, because I’m really struggling with the lack of meaningful activity in my current role, and it affects my motivation.

Answer

Seemingly, this depends on whether you feel you’re unnecessary there (basically hidden unemployment), or whether you just don’t like the role. If you’re unnecessary, then in my opinion it would be proper for you to move to a useful role, and to try during your service to maintain your spiritual level and your motivation to study. If it’s just a role you don’t like, then in my opinion it’s better to try to overcome it.
