Q&A: Zeraim, Kodashim, Taharot
Zeraim, Kodashim, Taharot
Question
Maybe the Rabbi would be willing to give a tip on how it’s best to study Zeraim and Kodashim. I studied in the usual way, with in-depth analysis and broad coverage, in Moed, Nashim, and Nezikin, and I also studied the laws of the Sabbath, niddah, eruvin, and more. Now I want to study Kodashim. I’m learning it on my own, and I studied Zevachim with Gemara, Rashi, Tosafot, and Maharsha, and I feel that I’m not learning efficiently. The topics are scattered, and I don’t get to everything; I’m missing background knowledge that suddenly shows up in the Mishnah. I’m not sure exactly how to define this feeling of frustration. I thought maybe it would be good to study Mishnah with Tiferet Yisrael, but afterward I sometimes feel that I get locked into his interpretation of the conclusion of the Talmudic discussion, and that stops my own thinking. It’s also hard because it’s not just broad coverage, but more than that, and yet you also don’t really understand. Maybe Maimonides. Does the Rabbi have any advice on how it’s best to go about it? In his opinion, is studying the tractates that are arranged in order a good approach?
Answer
One possible suggestion: Kehati, then Maimonides, and then the tractates in order.
