Q&A: Question about Separating Challah
Question about Separating Challah
Question
From about 1200 grams up to about 1600 grams (I see there are various opinions), one should separate challah without a blessing, because there is doubt whether challah must be separated from that amount; above that, one separates with a blessing.
What happens if I make a dough from 1300 grams, separate challah without a blessing, and then add another 300 grams to the dough? After all, if in truth it was not necessary to separate challah from the 1300, then the separation I did was only ceremonial and had no real effect, so now I really would need to separate with a blessing. But if it was in fact necessary to separate challah even from the 1300, then now I do not need to do anything, because challah was already separated from the 1300, and there is no need to separate anything from the additional 300.
Thank you.
Answer
The fact that there is no obligation to separate challah for a smaller amount does not mean that if you did separate it, the separation is invalid. In any case, at this point you have a Torah-level doubt, and I would separate again without a blessing from the entire dough.
