[Rabbi Michael Abraham] We’re dealing with Hanukkah matters. Well, yes, matters of dichotomies, not matters of Hanukkah. Matters of dichotomies and dissolving them. Today I hope I’ll finish with this part, and then I’ll move on. I said there would also be paradoxes and loops, so that’ll be in the next sessions. I spoke about a few basic techniques with which one can dissolve dichotomies, and today I want to add another two or three and then move on to a few examples to demonstrate it. One of them, really, is what we can call parallel planes of explanation. A lot of times we—it’s somewhat connected to the apparent correlations I talked about—a lot of times when we relate to some phenomenon and try to explain it, there’s an assumption that explanations—an explanation can only be one thing. Maimonides, for example, in the second root writes in passing that homiletic interpretation cannot be the interpretation of a verse, because a verse has only one interpretation. But today, since the situation has changed, they should be validated. That argument in itself is a fallacious argument. What is the logic here? It is a fallacious argument because the change you point to is a factual change, and you want to infer from it a normative change—in this case, a halakhic one—namely that a woman was once invalid for testimony and now a woman should be valid for testimony. In order for the argument to become valid, you need to add another assumption here: that the invalidity of a woman for testimony stemmed from the fact that she was uneducated or not involved in social life. Yes? If you add that, the argument becomes valid. So here too, many times there are parallel planes that people raise, but one needs to know that these planes are not parallel—they are different.
