Because at the foundation of both these processes sits something one can call choice or judgment, it doesn’t matter, but some decision that you make not because you are programmed. If you are programmed, then again it loses its meaning. And that is your image of God. Your image of God is that just as God created the world, you can create something from nothing on a small scale. But still, you create something from nothing. That is why it is called the image of God. And therefore the conception that it is intellect and the conception that it is will are not really all that different from one another. Because in both places, in order to call that intellect intelligence, you have to assume that something new is created there. It is not a required or programmed result of what existed before. And clearly human beings have talents that allow them more or less to do this. And that raises a somewhat complicated question: how do you subtract those talents in order to distill what pure intelligence is? Because if you were born in such a way that you are programmed to do this better, then one must somehow remove that from your intelligence measure. I don’t know, it’s a bit complicated. I don’t know how to define it fully, and certainly not how to calculate it fully. But I think the principle is clear. Now here it could be that what he means to say is that precisely when there is a problem of missing stages—or whatever they call these things in various ways—and here he says that if the Holy One, blessed be He, sends some angel to move evolution through one stage, and now it continues onward as well, then there is no problem. We see that everything happened evolutionarily, little by little; only angels solved for us the problem of the gaps, of the missing stages. It could be that this is what he means here. I’m not sure.
