Spells and enchantments

שו"תSpells and enchantments
שאל לפני 8 שנים

Hello Rabbi,
What is the extent of the prohibitions on witchcraft, magic, and the like? I've heard that some of the early ones interpret that there is no real reason for this and that it's all just tricks, but then it's not clear why it's forbidden. And what about demons and all the laws of couples on Passover?
Is there a problem with watching/doing card magic or things done by psychic artists like Lior Suchard and his ilk?

The Rishonim disagree on whether there is substance in all of these but they are forbidden (the prohibition is to rely on the powers of the Sitra Achra), or whether there is no substance in them and the prohibition is to be foolish (this is the Maimonides' method). He elaborated on this at length in the reply of Yeshiva Hayam to Rabbi Yaakov Hillel (head of the Nahar Shalom Yeshiva of the Kabbalists in Jerusalem), named after Booruch. The Poskim wrote that when the magician tells you explicitly that these are only tricks to be taken lightly. And it seems that this is simply the explanation. Regarding couples and demons, it seems to me that anyone who is not afraid has something to rely on (mainly the Maimonides). And really, if you think that there is nothing real about it, then perhaps there is even a prohibition in being afraid of all this.
