Q&A: Forbidden Sexual Relations
Forbidden Sexual Relations
Question
I saw that you were recently asked about this topic, and it got me thinking about the issue. I also have an intuition that this lies somewhere between a classic moral matter like bloodshed and a divine decree like idolatry. That is: I don’t expect a secular person to understand or observe the prohibition of idolatry. The prohibition of bloodshed I do expect him to understand. Forbidden sexual relations seem to fall somewhere in the middle. I do expect him to understand that there is value in classic, monogamous couplehood, and incest or other sexual promiscuity or homosexual relations — I do expect him to understand that. In your opinion, is that not correct? Is the whole issue of sexual conduct — whether incest or homosexual relations or just plain promiscuity — a decree unrelated to human morality?
