Q&A: S’chach on a Sukkah
S’chach on a Sukkah
Question
Hello Rabbi,
We expanded the sukkah this year and added new bamboo s’chach. As a result of the expansion, in part of the roof there is overlap between two layers of s’chach, so in those areas the covering is thicker.
I looked into the laws of s’chach (see: https://www.inn.co.il/news/506339) and found what was written there:
“Ideally, the s’chach should provide more shade than sun, but it should not be so thick that the large stars cannot be seen through it at night. But if one placed thick s’chach to the point that the rays of the sun cannot be seen through it, the sukkah is kosher (Shulchan Arukh 631:3).”
When I checked this evening, I was unable to see the large stars through the s’chach in some places.
I would appreciate the Rabbi’s guidance on the following points:
- Ideally—does it have to be possible to see the large stars from some particular point in the sukkah, or is this not actually required?
- Is a local overlap of “s’chach on top of s’chach” for the sake of connecting/extending it considered a halakhic problem, or is the sukkah kosher even if in those areas the thickening is substantial?
- In light of the current situation, is there any practical need now to thin out/move the s’chach, or can it be left as is until after the holiday?
Answer
Everything is fine. Put your mind at ease. There is no local requirement to see stars, and in any case it is not indispensable.
