Q&A: Smoking Light Drugs
Smoking Light Drugs
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I wanted to ask whether smoking light drugs like hashish/marijuana is permitted from a halakhic standpoint?
Answer
I don’t see any prohibition here. Of course, if it is harmful then maybe one could find a clause to prohibit it (do not destroy needlessly, and love yourself as yourself, etc. 🙂 ), but I don’t see a reason to refrain solely because of Jewish law when there are no other considerations.
Discussion on Answer
I’m against smoking drugs. What I said is that from the standpoint of Jewish law there’s nothing to add here. I don’t know what “escaping from one’s true self” means. Smoking drugs is harmful and addictive and costs a lot of money and takes away concentration and focus. It has many disadvantages, so it isn’t worthwhile. Still, a halakhic prohibition requires an explicit source (from the Torah, or from an enactment or a decree). There’s also no need for that, because if it isn’t worthwhile, then it isn’t worthwhile, whether or not there is such a Jewish law.
Hello Rabbi, I wanted to know whether there isn’t an issue of escaping from one’s true self when you smoke light drugs, since it is something that causes you to disconnect from who you are and basically turns you into a different person
