A Way to Fulfill the Commandment "And You Shall Love…"

Question

Hi Michi,
I kept musing about how to implement the commandment of loving God, and I arrived at the following insights, which are based on the idea I presented to you:
We believe that God created everything—therefore the proper way to express our love for God [when we are commanded to do so] is, first and foremost, by giving respect to everything God created.
And here I continue:
From this it follows that we must not harm anything in creation unless that harm is necessary for our existence—for example, food, housing, and so on.
And above all we must take care to prevent irreversible harm!
And from this it necessarily follows that we must be very thoughtful and pay attention to unforeseen consequences that arise from seemingly simple desires, when suddenly it becomes clear to us that even simple desires carry a high price beyond our means. For example, the need for birth control, the problem of environmental pollution, and especially the need to take environmental limits into account in everything related to food from animals.
Perhaps it will turn out that there is a great advantage here for commandment-observant Jews—they are, after all, used to planning their conduct in advance from Thursday until the onset of the Sabbath, and therefore they should be accustomed to measured, thoughtful conduct.
This matter—our duty to conduct ourselves in a deliberate way that carefully looks ahead—also appears in the definition of an unintentional killer: he is defined that way because he did not make sure that the axe head was firmly attached to the handle.
Perhaps there is no great news here for those seeking rapture in the love of God similar to that between a young man and a young woman in love, [which after all stems merely from the secretion of the hormone oxytocin,] but perhaps from here we should understand that just as a successful relationship is built through much labor and effort, while coping with raising children and making a living and everything else, and the bond between the couple is not at all like what it was in their youth [if it ever was…], so too here: the shared commitment to preserving creation may not only yield the expected results from the existential-environmental perspective, but perhaps also a kind of sense of partnership with the Holy One, blessed be He, that comes in place of love.
So, have a pleasant rest of the evening.
All the best.

Answer

I agree. I would only note that planning ahead is not specifically connected to the Sabbath. Still, halakhic conduct is indeed calculated and less spontaneous.
