Q&A: Angels
Angels
Question
Hello Rabbi, I have two questions regarding angels.
A. How can one even think about angels? It really seems like idolatry: one big God and lots of minor gods?
B. Why does God need angels at all?
Answer
A. Why are angels any more gods than human beings or physical forces are? Angels are created beings like any other creature, except that they have no body. So what? What does that have to do with idolatry?
B. The angels are His emissaries. In a modern conception, one can view the laws of nature as angels. They are the emissaries that carry out God’s will. So, for example, the demon described in the Talmud as “Shayya,” which is responsible for the deterioration of uninhabited houses, is called in modern science the second law of thermodynamics.
And Dever destroys is responsible for sunstroke.
