Q&A: Rabbi Sacks and The Great Partnership
Rabbi Sacks and The Great Partnership
Question
Hello Rabbi, have you read Rabbi Sacks's book The Great Partnership, which deals with the partnership between religion and science? What do you think of the book's central thesis in particular (summed up in the sentence, "Science takes things apart to understand how they work; religion puts things together to understand what they mean") and of the book in general?
More generally, what do you think of Rabbi Sacks? It seems there are many things you have in common (not afraid to confront questions, open-minded, combining broad and exceptional general knowledge, a tendency toward the philosophical side of various topics), but it seems that his way of approaching things is very different from yours (less logically analytical)…
Answer
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with him or his writings. From what I’ve heard about him in general, I should take the comparison as a compliment. So thank you.
His first book, Crisis and Covenant: Jewish Thought in Modern and Post-Modern Times, is highly recommended.
