Q&A: Deliberation in Choosing Books
Deliberation in Choosing Books
Question
Hello Rabbi,
After Two Carts, if I want to look into the two topics of “freedom” and “God” and all their implications, what would be preferable: the following two books from the quartet, or God Plays Dice and The Science of Freedom (if there is any similarity between them at all)?
Answer
There is some similarity. Between That Which Exists and God Plays Dice the connection is more tenuous, but The Science of Freedom compared to Man as the Grass of the Field is more similar. In the overlapping topics, the wording in my Yedioth Books volumes is later and, from my perspective, more up to date.
By the way, I had never noticed the similarity. Truth, Not Stable is very similar to Two Carts. In fact, in a certain sense I repeated the first trilogy from the quartet in the Yedioth Books volumes. I only noticed that now.
Discussion on Answer
There is not really much overlap, but if in any case you are reading one of them, then maybe Truth, Not Stable is preferable. It has far fewer digressions and side implications, but the argument there is more structured and tighter.
So you recommend Truth, Not Stable over Two Carts?
The second one seems more analytical, no?
