Q&A: Proof from Morality
Proof from Morality
Question
Hello Rabbi,
In the fourth notebook you demonstrated at length the proof for the existence of the Creator from the fact that we have objective morality, to which we compare the morality that we ourselves experience.
I didn’t understand, then, why each person has a different morality. If there is one objective and binding morality that God created, it would seem that everyone should agree in a sharp and clear way about what is moral and what is not. And as is well known, that is not the case.
I would be happy to hear your answer. Thank you very much!
Answer
It is not true that each person has a different morality. The differences are quite marginal. This can be compared to observing a distant object. Reuven says it is a star and Shimon says it is a plane. The truth is that it is either this or that. There is only one truth. But seeing a distant object is not unequivocal. On the other hand, nobody will say that it is a bird. Looking at the idea of the good is also not unequivocal, and therefore there are arguments, but they are at the margins.
