Q&A: Blessings Upon Seeing
Blessings Upon Seeing
Question
Is the blessing “Blessed is He who performed a miracle for me” recited only for a miracle involving an unusual intervention by the Holy One, blessed be He, in reality? And if so, is it recited nowadays according to the Rabbi’s view that the Holy One, blessed be He, generally does not intervene in reality?
Answer
I think it can be recited in any situation that arouses a sense of the Holy One, blessed be He, being involved. We can never really know whether it was a miracle, but this is a way of thanking Him in a general sense. Expressions of thanks are an opportunity to acknowledge His goodness for the world in general, like the blessing of “Who bestows goodness upon the undeserving” and the thanksgivings in prayer.
