Q&A: Authority of the Sages
Authority of the Sages
Question
Hello Rabbi,
According to the understanding that the sages of the Mishnah have formal authority over the sages of the Talmud, and therefore the latter do not dispute them [for example, a refutation by Amoraim against Tannaim], it is not clear how principles such as “something is missing, and this is what it teaches” fit with that. After all, the fact that they do not say explicitly that they disagree with them does not mean that in practice they are not disagreeing with them. In other words, even if the Amoraim “manage” to insert their words into the words of the Tanna, it is not clear why this does not amount to a breach of their formal authority. It seems quite obvious that they disagreed with the Tanna!
