Q&A: Humanities
Humanities
Question
Hello Rabbi. Some time ago I came across a Facebook video of a short Torah thought on the portion Bo by one of the New Age rabbis. It was a collection of deep-sounding but meaningless words, a pile of nonsense. While listening, a question came to mind: do rabbis of that sort, and professors in the humanities as well, themselves know what they mean? Do they have an idea? Because he was speaking seriously—it seemed like he meant something.
Answer
You should ask him. What do you want me to write here? I didn’t hear what he said, and I don’t know what this is about.
Discussion on Answer
It’s still far too general a question. You can’t answer it sweeping like that. Do you really think that thousands of people and millions of articles mean nothing at all? You’re getting carried away, seriously.
I’m not talking about him specifically. Do teachers of bogus disciplines really mean anything?
