Q&A: A toaster that had Passover pass over it with leaven stuck to it
A toaster that had Passover pass over it with leaven stuck to it
Question
Dear Rabbi Michael, hello,
I have a toaster that by mistake I did not sell to a non-Jew for Passover, and it has leaven from the whole year stuck to it, because I always do a quick cleaning when I take out toast. Is it permitted to use it? Does it need to be cleaned so that not even a slight trace of leaven remains stuck to it?
Thank you very much for all the answers!

Answer
If you clean it so that no actual visible leaven remains, it is permitted.
See for example here: http://din.org.il/2019/04/28/%D7%AA%D7%A0%D7%95%D7%A8-%D7%9E%D7%9C%D7%95%D7%9B%D7%9C%D7%9A-%D7%91%D7%97%D7%9E%D7%A5-%D7%A9%D7%9C%D7%90-%D7%A0%D7%9E%D7%9B%D7%A8-%D7%9C%D7%92%D7%95%D7%99/
Discussion on Answer
If it was nullified, then of course there is no problem.
Even if it was not nullified, can the crumbs in the toaster be considered automatically nullified based on what the Talmud says in tractate Pesachim 6b: Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: One who searches must nullify. What is the reason? If you say it is because of crumbs, they are not considered significant.
It seems so.
Even if there is actual visible leaven, it was presumably nullified before Passover. Does the decree also apply to leaven that was nullified?
