Diligence

Question

Hello Rabbi,
I wanted to ask whether, in the Rabbi’s opinion, there is any moral value in working when a person has no need for income, for example if he is very wealthy.
It seems to me that in the past it was accepted that people went to work only if there was an economic need. Nowadays, from the secular side there is a value placed on self-fulfillment (which personally does not seem to me much of a value), and from the Religious Zionist side there is a Kook-inspired approach that a profession is a kind of person’s spiritual mission in the world.
What is the Rabbi’s view?
Thank you

Answer

My view is that these are all baseless, nonsensical inventions. Self-fulfillment is also unrelated to the issue. You can do the same thing without being paid for it, or engage in self-fulfillment that is not work. Would you be any less fulfilled?
