Q&A: An Unusual Leap in the Evolution of the Human Brain
An Unusual Leap in the Evolution of the Human Brain
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I’m currently watching a neuroscience course by Professor Idan Segev, whom you mentioned in your book The Science of Freedom. During the course he showed an interesting graph of human brain weight throughout history:

You can see that there is a sudden drop in brain weight that runs counter to the general trend over the last ten thousand years. This is also the period of the beginning of written history and the agricultural revolution. In your opinion, can this sudden decline be seen as an indication of some kind of intervention by the Holy One, blessed be He, in the natural evolutionary process? This period also fits, in terms of order of magnitude, with the age of the world in the Book of Genesis — about 6,000 years from the beginning of the first man until today.
Best regards,
Answer
I have no idea. I also don’t know what this decline means (people once thought that brain size/volume determines intelligence, but that is not so).
