Q&A: Providence over the Righteous
Providence over the Righteous
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I am well familiar with your position regarding providence.
In No Person Has Power over the Wind, in the notes you referred to an article by Rabbi Shmuel Ariel (https://otniel.org/lesson/%D7%94%D7%90%D7%9D-%D7%9B%D7%9C-%D7%90%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%A2-%D7%9E%D7%9B%D7%95%D7%95%D7%9F-%D7%9E%D7%A9%D7%9E%D7%99%D7%99%D7%9D-%D7%A2%D7%99%D7%95%D7%9F-%D7%91%D7%A1%D7%95%D7%92%D7%99%D7%99/)
In the article he brings quite a few views among the medieval authorities (Rishonim) who hold that there is indeed no individual providence as a rule, but only over the righteous and the pious (or, more accurately, the closer a person is, the more providence there is over him).
Do these views contradict your opinion, or are you willing to accept that there is providence over certain people?
True, no experiment has ever been conducted on this matter, but perhaps the medieval authorities (Rishonim) who said this were righteous people and experienced providence over themselves firsthand.
(Of course, providence does not necessarily mean that their lives were pleasant; after all, even righteous people nowadays get sick and are harmed, but rather that God intervenes in their lives, for better or for worse.)
Thank you,
Nathan
Answer
I am willing to accept that, and I have even written about that possibility.
