Q&A: The Israel Prize
The Israel Prize
Question
Hello Rabbi,
The Rabbi still hasn’t expressed his opinion regarding the uproar over awarding the Israel Prize to Rabbi Ariel.
I’m interested in the Rabbi’s opinion about Rabbi Ariel in general and about his winning the prize,
and also about his statements themselves, and whether they are relevant to winning the prize.
Thank you,
Eliav
Answer
I haven’t seen the quotations being attributed to him. A priori, I assume this is part of the prevalent phenomenon of silencing, about which I’ve written more than once. Rabbi Ariel is a great Torah scholar, and he certainly doesn’t need me or the like of me to testify to that. Did he create something significant and original that is worthy of a prize? I don’t know.
In general, I support separating the person from his work. If the work merits a prize, it should not be denied because of the person. That is also what I thought regarding Leibowitz (where this was especially conspicuous). Perhaps there are very extreme cases in which I would think otherwise (a mass murderer who found a cure for cancer or conducted groundbreaking research).
