From the very beginning, Rabbi Edelstein and Rabbi Lando instructed people to obey the authorities, but they feared that a frontal confrontation with Rabbi Kanievsky would cause the Kanievsky family to turn Rabbi Kanievsky’s view into a banner and launch a holy war against the authorities.
The first letter, which said that the yeshiva had not stopped, etc., was a kind of compromise, while in practice in the Ponevezh Yeshiva, for example, students were instructed to study in their rooms, and two days later they were told to close the yeshiva. Again, this was not done dramatically, so as not to enter into a war with Kanievsky.
The letter from the Ministry of Health to Rabbi Edelstein was also a “commissioned” letter, intended to neutralize the Kanievsky family indirectly, since even after Rabbi Kanievsky instructed people not to pray with a minyan, they claimed that the instruction was directed only at Bnei Brak.
It is sad and shocking that while a global pandemic is raging, petty political considerations are being weighed, but in retrospect it was proven that in this way they ultimately managed to harness Rabbi Kanievsky to the wagon.
