The Seder Plate
Question
Hello Rabbi,
1. As a vegetarian, or someone staying with vegans or vegetarians, am I required to put specifically a shank bone on the plate?
2. In addition, is there a halakhic obligation to put specifically horseradish, etc.? If some of the ingredients needed to prepare all the symbols are missing
Answer
For some reason I now see that my answer didn’t get posted here. (I remember answering.)
The Talmud, Passover Tractate 114b, says that one can also place a vegetable (beet) or another cooked dish (rice). All of these are customs, and if something is missing, then it’s missing.
