Q&A: The Sexual Urge and the Sea of Suffering It Brought
The Sexual Urge and the Sea of Suffering It Brought
Question
With God's help.
Hello. "The Sages taught: Three had intercourse in the ark, and all of them were stricken: the dog, the raven, and Ham. The dog was bound, the raven spat, and Ham was stricken in his skin." [Sanhedrin 108b]. Rashi explains: "Spat"—he emitted semen from his mouth into the mouth of the female. What has troubled me for a long time is why the Creator chose, in creating man, specifically the possibility of sexual organs and an urge of a dirty and evil kind for the sake of reproduction. And the solution that came to mind before I encountered the words of the Sages in Sanhedrin was transferring semen from mouth to mouth, as described here regarding the raven. That way there is no degrading act, and no process that needs the ugly urge that brings about an erection, which has brought a sea of suffering in human history. And that same Creator chooses this method as a punishment?
Answer
There is nothing ugly here at all. There are things for which modesty is appropriate, but that does not mean they are ugly.
But in general, I do not know why the Holy One, blessed be He, made one decision or another.
Modesty is appropriate for them because it is ugly and bad. Better not continue, so that a storm doesn't break out here.
