Q&A: Regarding the obligation to act according to reason
Regarding the obligation to act according to reason
Question
In honor of Rabbi Michi, the principle of Rabbi Shimon Shkop regarding monetary law is well known. Seemingly, if so, how can the other person claim against me on the basis of what my human reason obligates me to do? After all, I am the one who is supposed to fulfill what my own reason tells me. So what does the other person have to do with what my reason tells me???…??
Answer
My reason tells me that the other person has a right, and therefore I am forbidden to rob him of it. His claim does not stem from the fact that my reason says so, but from the fact that logical reasoning (not necessarily mine) says that he has a right.
This is like asking: how can the other person make a claim against me if I violated what the Torah commanded? My problem is with the Torah, not with him.
