That he should shut himself in a room and talk with the angels…
Question
It was reported that rabbi no. 1 [from Committee 5, which is responsible for Meron] testified before the commission of inquiry into the Meron disaster:
that the rebbes have been playing around with the cotton wool there for a long time, and competing with one another over the whole atmosphere there… and really all the bonfire-lighting ceremonies there should be canceled, maybe except for one [Boyan?], and even that only if the rebbe talks in a closed room for as long as he wants with the angels, but once he comes out he should light it within 2 minutes and leave [so that tens of thousands won’t be put at risk while waiting and being crushed in the crowd…]
In my view, whoever defined what goes on there as a pagan ritual and idol worship was right. What does the Rabbi think about this cult of fire, the rebbes, the money, and the heaps of believers? Is this really idol worship? Or is it something legitimate?
Answer
Completely legitimate, but unnecessary and lacking any real value or meaning. It’s an experience, nothing more. But there is no idol worship here, at least not in the ritual itself. The notions and slogans surrounding it—maybe yes.
