Q&A: Desecrating the Sabbath at Corona Drive Testing Sites
Desecrating the Sabbath at Corona Drive Testing Sites
Question
The incident was as follows:
At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, a group of yeshiva students was sent to the Corona Drive testing complexes in Israel.
The complexes operated about 8 hours a day—from the late morning until the late afternoon.
Drivers were not forced to come for testing that very day; rather, each driver chose an appointment at whatever time was convenient for him.
They wanted to open the complexes on the Sabbath, and this involved several halakhic problems, such as sticking on labels and directing cars to drive in the lanes.
Was it permissible to operate the complexes because of considerations of worldwide danger to life? If so, why not compel those being tested to come that very day even on Fridays?
Answer
I don’t think that justifies desecrating the Sabbath. There is no direct causal connection here to danger to life.
