Q&A: A guard who needs bathroom breaks—what should he do?
A guard who needs bathroom breaks—what should he do?
Question
A paid guard watching over Arabs: the security instructions are not to take your eyes off them, even for a short time. The shift is 9.5 hours and sometimes even longer. Common sense suggests that whoever wrote the document wants to be 100% covered against any problem that might come up. On the other hand, of course it is not reasonable that a human being would not need, from time to time, to relieve himself, and he is also not required to do so in front of the workers. So what should he do? (And not be considered negligent in his job.)
Answer
I think you should raise the matter with your employer. It is obvious that he is supposed to allow you to excuse yourself properly. Even a shepherd, who is a paid guardian, is exempt at the times when people normally go in and out (Bava Metzia 93).
