In the book In Their Circle by Lorincz (I think it also appears in Orchot Rabbenu by Horowitz of blessed memory), it is brought that he had an understanding based on trust with the professor who ran Sheba (or Tel HaShomer?) that if Lorincz requested it, he would release a body without an autopsy.

And indeed, Lorincz would ask, and the professor kept his promise. The Steipler was absolutely thrilled.

One day, protests and commotion started because they wanted to perform an autopsy on a deceased woman.
Lorincz called the professor: please release her. The professor told him: come to me.
He came, sat with him, and he told him: look, this woman was under my care in fertility treatment. Recently we introduced a new experimental drug, with the patients’ consent. This woman died suddenly. I have to perform an autopsy and see the cause. If I find out that it is unrelated to the drug, we can continue the trial. Besides her, there are currently 10 women in the department being treated with this drug. This is an immediate, concrete case of saving lives, here and now.

Lorincz went out and told the protesters that. Calm down — there is a concrete case of saving life here.

They did not calm down and told him that the professor was a liar, and that she was not being treated for fertility at all, and there was no drug, and no experiment, and no 10 women in the department — in short, complete nonsense, and he should release the body immediately.

Lorincz went back to the professor and demanded that he keep his promise.
The professor tried to persuade him, but Lorincz insisted.
With a heavy heart, and while warning Lorincz that he was endangering lives — but a promise is a promise — he released her.

Lorincz immediately went to the Steipler to report.
He told the Steipler and waited for praise.

But the Steipler rebuked him. You interfere in a matter of saving life? Endangering lives? Have you gone mad? Run immediately and return the body to the professor…
So that he can perform the autopsy and determine whether to continue the trial.

Lorincz ran to the funeral and shouted to return the body, but the zealots of course mocked him, and nobody paid him any attention…

And 10 daughters of Israel had their fertility treatment stopped because of the doubt, and suffering close to death was decreed upon them (“and if there is no dead woman, then I am as good as dead”).

From then on he understood that people were exaggerating this issue and endangering lives out of fanaticism, and he did not help anymore.

My question: Did the Steipler hold, like the Chazon Ish, the Tzitz Eliezer, and Rabbi Goren, that it is permitted to perform an autopsy for the sake of drug trials?
Or perhaps only where there really are 10 actual patients lying there in practice, and there is an immediate doubt involving saving life, is it permitted to perform an autopsy — but not for a drug trial?
