Q&A: Regarding the Previous Question
Regarding the Previous Question
Question
Hello, honorable Rabbi, may he live long and well.
Regarding what you answered me earlier.
1. Do you hold that the Oral Torah—at least its foundation—was given down to Moses at Sinai? And if not, then how did they keep the Written Torah, which is formulated in a rather vague way, and why do we observe Jewish law today?
2. And if the Oral Torah in its foundation was given at Sinai, then is it possible to change everything? Even the basic foundations, like the thirty-nine categories of Sabbath labor?
3. You said that a future Sanhedrin could interpret the verses differently. Wasn’t exposition of the verses transmitted through tradition, with only the Sages able to do that?.
4. If you have the energy, I’d be happy if you could direct me to a few sources where it is said that all Torah-level laws can be changed, and likewise that the meaning of the verses is in our hands.
Answer
I didn’t understand what “earlier” means. Why didn’t you write this as a continuation of the previous discussion? If you can’t manage that, then at least give me a link. I can’t remember everything that was written here and in what context.
