Question
I follow some of our leading politicians on Twitter. At the moment the spotlight is naturally directed more at the left, but I’m not sure that’s relevant only to them.
Regardless of political position, a very clear impression comes across that the great majority of them (with a few exceptions) are really, really not very smart, and I’m trying to put it gently.
Absurd arguments, ridiculous inferences, incoherent responses. I’m intentionally not giving examples so as not to get dragged into a nitpicky and political discussion about each case, but you can follow them and see it easily.
Do you think my impression is mistaken? Or is there really such a thing?
If it isn’t mistaken, why is it דווקא these kinds of people who get there, and is there any possibility or need to change that?
Answer
I don’t think they’re especially stupid. Some are more intelligent and some less, like in any group. The important point to notice is that almost anyone who publishes lots of thoughts in public and has many followers will get caught saying foolish things. All the more so because politicians suffer from demagoguery for professional reasons (they’re not teachers or lecturers; they need political results).
Discussion on Answer
It should be noted that the Knesset is supposed to represent the people, and the people are made up of both the wise and the foolish. So it’s only natural that in a democracy the Knesset would be made up of the whole spectrum.
I say this half-jokingly, of course, but in my opinion there is a kernel of truth here.
Not that I understand why anyone would follow them…
