Q&A: Instant Repentance?
Instant Repentance?
Question
Hello,
I didn’t quite understand Maimonides’ words —
How exalted is the level of repentance: Yesterday this person was separated from the Lord, the God of Israel, as it says, “Your iniquities have separated between you and your God”; he cries out and is not answered, as it says, “Even if you make many prayers,” etc.; he performs commandments and they tear them up before him, as it says, “Who asked this of you, to trample My courtyards?” “If only there were among you one who would shut the doors,” etc. But today he is attached to the Divine Presence, as it says, “But you who cleave to the Lord your God”; he cries out and is answered immediately, as it says, “Before they call, I will answer”; he performs commandments and they receive them pleasantly and joyfully, as it says, “For God has already accepted your deeds.” And not only that, but they long for them, as it says, “Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.”
This makes it sound simple and easy, and in less than 24 hours.
I know from personal experience and from other people that it’s not exactly like that.
