Q&A: Mourner’s Kaddish for Someone Who Has No Sons
Mourner’s Kaddish for Someone Who Has No Sons
Question
Hello and blessings. I wanted to ask the Rabbi: my grandmother died and she has no son to say Kaddish for her. From the standpoint of common sense, is there any reason to look for someone who will say Kaddish for her for payment, or is there no point in investing specifically in that avenue? Would a charitable free-loan fund not be preferable? Is there any point at all in trying to do something for the deceased, or is there no benefit for him or her in that (aside from learning from the deceased’s words and conduct)?
Answer
It seems to me, based on reasoning, that there is no real point in Kaddish, although people generally think there is. I also think that in general there is no point in doing things for the deceased, but here I am less certain. Perhaps if their influence on me is for the good, then the practical results of that really can be credited to their merit.
