Q&A: Rabbi Chaim of Brisk
Rabbi Chaim of Brisk
Question
What, in the Rabbi’s opinion, was his innovation?
And also, does the Rabbi think that every contemporary advance in Torah study should be based on his method?
Answer
To discuss his innovation would require a whole article, and this is not the place for it (see Rabbi Yehoshua Zevin’s article in Personalities and Methods). But some things are well known: the method of logical distinction, and conceptual analysis and synthesis.
Nothing is mandatory. Everyone learns in the place and in the way that his heart desires. But in my personal opinion, it is very worthwhile to use his tools. And apparently I’m in good company on this matter.
Discussion on Answer
Yes, we understand that the Rabbi has been busy these past few nights.
In the mornings.
For some reason, this question slipped past me, so my reply was delayed. Sorry.
