Q&A: The Physico-Theological Proof
The Physico-Theological Proof
Question
To the honored Rabbi, may he live long and well,
1) The Rabbi argues that there is no such thing as a miracle within nature. But the whole physico-theological proof seems to claim exactly that: the laws of nature operated in their regular way, yet instead of leading to chaos they led to order. For example, as you explained, the force of gravity overcame the other forces. Is that a miracle? Seemingly not in the simple sense, but still one could say that this is divine providence. So I still don’t really understand why the Rabbi maintains that the creation of the world happened through God, yet there are no miracles within nature.
2) The Rabbi says that the atheists are right within the laws, but mistaken beyond them. From there the Rabbi moved to the proof from the first cause and not the physico-theological proof—that is, who created the laws.
3) Doesn’t the “God of the gaps” also exist in the philosophical hypothesis? How did chaos create order? The Rabbi brings a proof from the second law of thermodynamics, but shouldn’t we be looking for an explanation on the scientific plane for that?
4) In general, if we know what caused all the miracles and wonders of the amazing providence that took place over the universe’s 14 billion years, then what is the point of attributing it to God (aside from the first cause)? Is the basis of the physico-theological claim: a. random laws produce randomness; b. random laws produced order, so we must say there is a guiding hand; c. if I know why the random laws produced order, then the proof falls away.
Answer
1. Completely incorrect. The laws of nature operated regularly, and they are built in such a way that our world naturally emerges from them. There is no miracle here within the laws; rather, the very formation of the laws is the miracle. But that miracle did not occur within the laws of nature, but in their coming into being.
3. No chaos created order.
4. Incorrect. a. Random laws produce disorder. b. In our world the laws are not random (that is, they are special), since they did not produce disorder but order. Conclusion: there is a guiding hand (that created special laws).
