Q&A: Does He Exist
Does He Exist
Question
Is there an argument for atheism that you can understand and accept as meeting the tests of logic, philosophy, and common sense, even if you do not agree with it?
(And more specifically, among your children who do not believe, what is their argument, and why do you not refute it?)
Answer
That is a difficult question. By my standards of logic and common sense—no. But there are other people for whom it does pass. Therefore, not everything that seems correct to me is supposed to seem correct to everyone else. And to assume that one can "refute" every such position is itself an unfounded assumption. One can raise various counterarguments. Beyond that, in order to believe in the Jewish God, belief in the philosophical God is not enough.
