Q&A: The Prohibition of New Grain Outside the Land of Israel — A Short Time After Passover
The Prohibition of New Grain Outside the Land of Israel — A Short Time After Passover
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I went through your replies in this responsa thread:
https://mikyab.net/Responsa/Concern about chadash on weekdays/
but I still wanted to consult you regarding my specific case.
I’m flying next week to Sri Lanka, and after checking with a kosher restaurant, I understood that they are not careful there about the prohibition of new grain.
Can one nevertheless eat there, given that only 2–2.5 months have passed since Passover (and even 3 days before that), so practically speaking it is unlikely that such wheat would already be in use? Also, according to the following site:
https://www.indexmundi.com/agriculture/?country=lk&commodity=wheat&graph=production
Sri Lanka does not grow wheat, so everything comes from imports, which leaves even less time for grain grown after Passover.
It can be seen that most wheat imports come from Canada and the U.S., according to the following site:
https://www.export.gov/article?id=Sri-Lanka-Agricultural-Sector
In addition, according to what I read on the following site (relatively old, from 2002):
http://www.fao.org/docrep/006/y4011e/y4011e04.htm#bm04
the spring grain cycle is usually sown in late winter–early spring and harvested in late summer (and even in the fall).
Thanks in advance
Answer
Hello Jonathan.
First, I tried to open the link you sent to my answer, and it’s broken.
Second, I don’t have information about the facts on the ground. It’s better to call the Chief Rabbinate (sorry for the vulgar expression) and ask. They have people who deal with this issue and know the facts around the world as well.
Discussion on Answer
Unfortunately not. Maybe it’s on their website
Thanks for the quick response.
Another attempt at the link to your previous responsum:

Do you happen to have contact details for the relevant person at the Rabbinate?
