Q&A: The Talmud Department in Academia
The Talmud Department in Academia
Question
I am a rebbe teaching Talmud in depth in a yeshiva.
1. In undergraduate Talmud studies, do they learn real things, or is it pseudo-scientific nonsense? And is it even really a "science"?
2. Are these important things, or do they have no value or purpose? Is it worth studying, or is it a waste of time?
Answer
There are definitely real things there, but that does not mean you need to devote three years to it. You can read articles or books and take from them what suits you. Of course, you can also choose not to.
In my opinion, it is not really a science (the term "pseudo-scientific nonsense" suggests that you know my view on the matter), but things that are not science can still be important, and they can also be true and valuable.
