What does the Rabbi think about Bennett’s lawsuit campaign?
Question
With God's help,
Hello Rabbi,
I wanted to ask what you think about Bennett’s lawsuit campaign. Right now he’s suing all kinds of anonymous people I’ve never heard of, because they said about him that he is descended from a gentile or a female convert. Likewise, there seem to be several clips of settlement agreements where he forces them to apologize. Some would say the videos are undoubtedly sad…
On the one hand, there is something good about this if it lowers the level of fake content online (assuming it really is fake). On the other hand, once he is running as a politician in the country, isn’t he supposed to expose himself to public smears? Especially since this is a common norm in the country. Also, some of the defendants and apologizers are not journalists (whereas with regard to journalists one may expect a higher standard of factual accuracy, from an ordinary person one cannot expect that).
Also, he is a politician who deceived quite a few voters on camera.
Answer
What’s the problem? Someone who lies brazenly should get hit for it. This is not about factual inaccuracy. If a politician, by virtue of being a politician, makes himself into a victim for liars, then you’d also have to permit him to steal, because the average politician is a thief. Twisted logic that suits Bibi and the propagandists/liars of Likud.
