Q&A: Selection of Justices to the Supreme Court
Selection of Justices to the Supreme Court
Question
Rabbi Michi, hello!
I didn’t see in your latest article any discussion of who is supposed to determine who the justices of the Supreme Court will be. Maybe I missed it—what is the Rabbi’s opinion on the matter?
Begin, for example, argued, as far as I know, that on the committee there should be a minority of politicians, because the court needs to be as independent as possible.
Answer
I hardly addressed any of the specific details of the reform, because that wasn’t the topic there.
It’s impossible to decide this in isolation from the rest of the reform’s details. The main problem in the discussions about it is that they are being conducted on each detail separately, instead of on the overall picture. After all, there is interdependence among the details. If the court cannot review the government, then there is no problem with the government appointing it; on the other hand, there is also no need for that, since in any case it does not deal with questions of worldview. And so on.
