Q&A: Copyright in Non-Commercial Use
Copyright in Non-Commercial Use
Question
Hello,
I wanted to ask the Rabbi’s opinion regarding copyright.
For example, is it permitted to use images I found on the internet in order to prepare a presentation or a poster, for non-commercial use and without any intent of financial profit, such as presenting an academic paper at an exhibition, etc.?
It seems to me that culturally, any average person would tell me there is no problem with this at all, and even if there is a problem, it is generally impossible to track down the original owner in order to pay him for the work (if I have no other alternatives).
What does the Rabbi say about this?
Answer
What determines this here is the law. When the use is non-commercial, it seems to me that it is permitted, provided that you cite the source of the image (moral copyright).
Discussion on Answer
I told you that the question is legal, not halakhic. If you want an authoritative answer, ask a lawyer.
I didn’t understand — “it seems to me” it’s permitted, or not?
Rabbi, it is not common practice to cite the source of an image in works for one-time use, such as a presentation or a poster,
is it still necessary?
