Q&A: Is it preferable for someone who could develop a cure for cancer to sit and study?
Is it preferable for someone who could develop a cure for cancer to sit and study?
Question
What does the Rabbi think about the following story:
There was an incident involving a professor who was a relative of his. At one point he imagined and thought he had found a cure for cancer, some kind of breakthrough in the field that could save many millions of people around the world.
For the sake of developing the medicine, he invested a very great deal of time. In practice, nothing came of the idea in the end.
Rabbi Moshe was very unhappy with the whole matter, to the point that he expressed himself at the time and said, from the standpoint of Torah, a strong statement: Even if we were to imagine that his invention had succeeded, and through it the disease would have disappeared from the world, it still would not have been worth it, compared to the great loss of Torah study caused to that doctor during the time he invested in that medical work. (Editor's note: see Babylonian Talmud, Megillah 16b: Rav Yosef said: Torah study is greater even than saving lives…).
