Reasons for the Commandments
Question
Hello and blessings!
One of the things that I don’t understand about approaches that hold that the commandments are a royal decree, and beyond that completely arbitrary, is the fact that we see that some commandments are more severe and some less severe. For violating some, one is punished with excision, and for others not, etc. A positive commandment overrides a prohibition, but it does not override a prohibition that carries excision, and there are other examples as well. If the only reason for observing the commandments is that they are a royal decree, why distinguish between different commandments?
Answer
You’re right. Those are very strange approaches in several other respects as well.
