Q&A: The Limits of Discourse
The Limits of Discourse
Question
What should our attitude be toward Holocaust deniers? Should they be silenced, or are they too allowed to offer their wares?
Should open discussion be allowed even on this issue, or is the concern that uncritical people will fall for their nonsense?
And if they should be silenced because of that concern, who decides, and how will they decide, which issues the masses might be misled about?
Or perhaps the justification for censoring people like that is a different one? (If the Rabbi supports censoring them.)
Answer
I oppose censorship and silencing of any kind, including Holocaust denial. Whoever is bothered by it should offer satisfactory answers.
