Using Ancient Bones for Research Purposes
Question
Hello Rabbi,
Recently I learned that when archaeologists find human bones in excavations in the Land of Israel, they are required to transfer them to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and they are not allowed to conduct any research on them. I assume that from the standpoint of Jewish law there is an obligation to bury the dead and that it is forbidden to make any use whatsoever of a person’s bones. In your opinion, is there any way to allow research on bones while still observing Jewish law? (Research on the bones can, for example, make it possible to understand what the person’s diet was.)
Best regards,
Answer
It does not seem to me that there is any permission for this.
