Q&A: Fabric Walls as Sukkah Walls
Fabric Walls as Sukkah Walls
Question
With God's help,
Hello and blessings to the Rabbi, strength and blessings on all your many works.
I wanted to ask the Rabbi what his opinion is about walls that move in the wind because they are not taut. The fabric itself is threaded through the metal bars of the sukkah (Netzach Sukkah), so there is no chance that they will come loose from the sukkah.
I saw that there are two approaches among the halakhic decisors: Rabbi Ovadia's view, and others, is to be stringent, since apparently for them the problem is the movement of the fabric itself; whereas Rabbi Melamed and others deem it valid, since for them the problem is the fabric becoming detached from the walls, not its movement in the wind. (That is also how one can understand the abridged Yalkut Yosef, although his words can be understood according to both approaches.) By the way, both Rabbi Ovadia, of blessed memory, and Rabbi Melamed cite a common source for their claims (at least I noticed one common source).
I wanted to ask what the Rabbi's opinion is on the matter.
Thank you in advance
Answer
On logical grounds, Rabbi Melamed's view seems very compelling.
Discussion on Answer
Did you read what I wrote? It doesn't seem so. Read it again.
I'll direct my question here: "I saw that you wrote that, on logical grounds, it seems to you that fabric walls are valid for a sukkah. I wanted to ask: if the fabric walls do not move in the wind more than three handbreadths, does that make a difference for the halakhic ruling or not?"
