Q&A: Morality
Morality
Question
Could you please point me to a column or something similar on the topic of morality
not the relationship between morality and Jewish law
and not the relationship between morality and God, like for example column 456,
but rather what morality is and whether it exists
Thank you very much, and this is a great site, and your dedication in answering people is truly impressive.
Answer
I didn’t understand the questions: what is morality, and whether it exists.
Discussion on Answer
If you want an answer, you’ll need to think for a minute and formulate a question. Rational rules that guide behavior and intuition are the same thing. Whether morality exists is discussed in column 456, which you said you read.
It’s definitely discussed there in column 456, in the paragraph about moral realism.
I’m simply looking for a column that discusses the concept at length, with the explanation and detail that are your trademark,
and not just as an aside in connection with proving God from morality.
Thank you very much.
It’s explained there too. At the moment I don’t remember anything devoted just to that. There’s also something in the fourth notebook, part 3, and in the lecture series on morality.
At the most basic level, I’m simply looking for your direct elaboration on this topic itself, and not its implications for other debates.
What is morality: rational rules that guide the way we conduct ourselves. Or perhaps an intuition deeply ingrained in us, or a third option.
Does it exist: simply, does morality actually exist, or is it a human invention, or a social construct, etc. etc.?
